BOOK CASE

1. Closed and locked box,top, north face and west face       Wooden box constructed from left over timber, stained, painted and varnished. Various removeable small pieces of wood act as locks.The interior of the box is lined with cushioned red velvet. The inside of the lid is lined with marbled paper.Designed to contain a copy of Tom Phillips book 'A Humament' which is modified on every page and fitted into a custom made slipcase.

GAME TOWER EXTERIOR

1. Tower complete, north face and west face       A wooden box made of hardwoods and softwoods, stained, painted, varnished and waxed. It comprises base, four layers and roof, constructed so that the bottom three layers are interchangeable and can also be rotated through 180 degrees to provide various combinations. Also two side pillars that slot into opposite sides of the box. All locked together with integrated wooden locks.Within the roof is a chamber that can hold small marbles introduced through a removeable top cover. They can be released into the box through four traps individually operated that correspond to the four sides of the box and allow the marbles to fall through the box. Their path and destination is detemined by the arrangement of the layers of the box.

GAME TOWER INTERIOR

1. Tower complete with locks and roof removed       The inside decoration of the box includes staining, painting, collage and varnish.The games stored within the box include; chess, draughts, tiddleywinks, dibs, marbles, standard playing cards and Happy Families, backgammon, cribbage, dominoes and poker dice. The decoration of the layers imitates board games and allows for the invention of new games from the components within the box.

ADVENT CALENDAR

1. Bottom left corner of facade, windows closed       Constructed of mdf and wood, card and paper, 'gessoed' on the face with layers of Plaka (a casein based paint) and then oil gilded with gold leaf with small addtions of oil paint in a Venetian Turpentine medium, some areas of gold tooled with a punch. Brass hinges face mounted.The back panel of the calendar is hinged at the base to allow access to the interior. Each window has a recessed 'pocket' to contain the image which is held in place by a small strip of polyester. Images are collected from old christmas cards, wrapping paper and other seasonal items or made to order and are changed each year. The main central window is designed to hold an image a little smaller than A6 making it easier to select postcards as the source.It is intended that the doors can be opened in any sequence although traditionally the large central doors are opened on 25th December. [There is a symbol based numerical sequence painted onto the doors but so far it has not been used]

10. Verso of calendar with support struts in the open position       Support struts are locked into open position at right angles to the back of calendar by a sliding mechanism that is also used to lock the struts flat to the back when the calendar is packed away  
           
HOMAGE TO CHERNIKHOV

1. Side View, Face 1       Balsa wood construction commissioned by Paintworks to demonstrate the versatlility of their new range of balsa wood sheets etc. Inspired by the Russian Constructivist architect Chernikhov who produced many designs for imaginary buildings
